The site was developed as part of Jean Monnet Policy Network Challenges and Opportunities for EU Heritage Diplomacy in Ukraine (HER-UKR), an international research project examining the role of heritage in relations between Ukraine and the European Union. Conducted in 2023-2026, HER-UKR brought together researchers from 15 universities working across heritage studies, international relations, memory studies, strategic communication and related fields.
This resource grows particularly from HER-UKR’s research on the strategic communication of Ukraine’s heritage. Its purpose is to make reliable information and informed perspectives more readily accessible, while also encouraging critical engagement with the ways in which history, culture and identity are represented and contested.
The site has been developed collaboratively by researchers at the Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy, Ukraine and the University of Canterbury | Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha, Aotearoa New Zealand, and with design and development support from the UC Arts Digital Lab | Te Pokapū Aronui ā-Matihiko.
This is a curated academic resource rather than a comprehensive encyclopaedia. Inclusion of an external source or link does not necessarily imply endorsement of all views expressed there. Interviews and other attributed contributions represent the views of their individual speakers or authors. Because cultural heritage, scholarship and the circumstances surrounding the war against Ukraine continue to develop, information presented here may also change over time.
HER-UKR is co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Policy Debate action (Project 101127459). Views and opinions expressed are those of the authors or contributors and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
This site serves both professionals – such as academics, diplomats, policymakers, and creatives – and the general public interested in Ukraine’s unique cultural and historical profile. Our resources are designed to assist in creating Ukrainian Studies courses, preparing professional presentations on Ukrainian issues, and implementing a systemic framework for heritage diplomacy across Ukrainian and European diplomatic missions. We hope the provided materials will spark the interest of our users and inspire them to further explore Ukraine as a country with deep historical roots and a unique national identity.
